It was a big day for methven radio on Wednesday September 23rd, 2009. After recieving the transmitter and aerial in the post that morning there was no stopping us putting all together and hauling up the mast. At approx. 3:45pm the first test transmission was broadcast and Methven Community Radio was born!

We've purchased a transmitter and aerial rig - delivery in two weeks! So its been a few months of networking and planning which has brought us to this point but most importantly the generosity and support of the Methven community. Thanks to all who have helped so far in making this a reality.

So what are your thoughts on a
Methven Community Radio?
A low power FM radio station is a very useful way for
communities to get their message across. A few years ago,
the Government opened up a number of frequencies on the
FM band to low power, local broadcasting. With a maximum
power of 1 watt, these radio stations have a range of up to
25 kilometres, depending on terrain. With more than 60
Heavy rock, Christian, hindi language and political minority
interest stations broadcasting across New Zealand it is
proven to be an easy, and effective mode of communication.
Methven Community Radio, in general terms, will aim to
provide an accessible community based broadcasting service

to help fulfill the cultural, education, and social needs of the

residents of Methven as well as providing activities that

develop potential through recreation, education and creative arts.
More specifically:
Providing information of benefit to people living in Methven on

matters including health, financial advice, social and

education opportunities, agriculture, employment and alpine
safety;
Providing free publicity for community projects including, waste

management, health, artistic, cultural and environmental projects;
Promoting and broadcasting music composed or performed by

Methven residents; Providing skills training in broadcasting and

media activities to young people and unemployed people living in

Methven; Liasing and co-operating with other groups and organisations

(whether private or local or central government) to further the

purposes of a ‘community’ radio.
A survey building a demographic of potential radio listeners
is currently in circulation through both Mt Hutt College and Mt
Somers schools and is posted at Methven i-Site, Cinema Paradiso,
Primo Café and The Blue Pub for the public to participate.

In the usually sleepy little town of Mt Hutt Village, excitement began to brew at the prospect of letting the inhabitants loose on the airwaves with the introduction of "Methven Radio", the brainchild of the ever inventive Fraser.
